If you want to get ahead, you have to know how to market yourself. Neoliberalism teaches us that we are the only ones responsible for our successes – and for our failures. That’s dangerous, says Will Storr. The consequences can include self-doubt and depression. And, Storr continues, a society that’s too obsessed with itself becomes asocial. After all, people with high self-esteem can be truly unbearable.
