Loneliness is a widespread phenomenon in modern-day society. Brandtzaeg's research shows that artificial intelligence can help combat this problem by enabling chatbots to act as friends and support social relationships in everyday life.

Chatbots can also help people with social phobias interact better with others. According to Brandtzaeg, some people even consider AI friendships to be of equal value or better than real human relationships because they are available at all times.

Brandtzaeg argues for an increased development of AI that focuses on the community and collective benefits, rather than self-centred approaches. He warns that an overly egocentric focus can jeopardise social capital within society.
