"Art may be the best way to understand Artificial Intelligence"

Marcus du Sautoy's book “The Creativity Code” explores the meaning of creativity and how machine learning will change and enrich our understanding of what it means to be human. So, what is creativity? In this video from “Wired UK”, du Sautoy refers to cognitive scientist Margaret Boden's definition: creative actions should be novel, surprising and have value. According to du Sautoy, all three qualities were present in 2016 when AlphaGo, an AI trained in the game of Go, made a particularly unique and important move against then world champion Lee Sedol to win the game.

Marcus du Sautoy will be speaking at the AI conference Discovery on Steroids, which takes place at the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute on 5 July 2022. Sign up now!
